  • The month is rolling by and our goal of getting a monthly newsletter out is at risk! But we've been having a great time at the Fall Knitting Getaway Weekends. High on a ridge with spectacular views, the Weekend at Kirkridge (near NYC and Philly) was wonderful. Hurricane Isabel threatened the Weekend at Sanctuary (near DC and Baltimore), but brave knitters headed into the storm and showed up anyway. Here's what some of the attendees said:

bullet"A great experience...I will definitely sing your praises to every knitter and wannabe knitter I know"
bullet"There is nothing I would change...except maybe to stay longer."
bullet"Jill is truly great and the overall spirit and ambience was perfect...would come back in a second!"
bullet"Wonderful classes, great food, awesome atmosphere, great people!"

We're resting a bit (if you can call running a business, a shop, designing, etc. resting) for the October Weekends, and we still have a few spaces for the California events. Call today to reserve a space:
    bulletOctober 17-19, near San Francisco

    Getaway Knitters

Do you picture a Y2Knit Knitting Getaway Weekend as a group of grandmas sitting around knitting? Think again! We have some grandmas, but they are fascinating women, many of them professionals by day. Here's a "profile" of women who attend the Knitting Getaway Events.

Age range is roughly 35-65, though we have younger and older too. Many women come alone, others with a friend or as a mother/daughter duo. (We love the events near SF because our mother comes to those.)

Professions range as wide as your imagination: attorney, nurse, singer, writer, CEO, administrative secretary, teacher, federal agent, software engineer, network administrator, stay-at-home mom, marketing and sales...the list goes on. What we all have in common is a passion for fibers and knitting.

What is consistent at each event is that each person who attends brings so much with them and each group is a composite of just the right people. We hope to see you at one of our events!

    What's Hot!
Many knitters have gotten caught up in the scarf craze - quick, easy projects with fun novelty yarns. Y2Knit has a new "twist" on scarves. we're using Softwist as the primary yarn - a great wool/rayon blend with a sheen - and partnering that with any kind of novelty. Softwist gives the scarf a lovely drape.

Customer novelty favorites are Mosaic FX and St. Tropez. There's no limit to the combinations, either with color or texture. With Softwist at $4.50 a skein and most novelties under $10, a scarf is not only quick, but inexpensive. Great gifts!

For a great fitting scarf, try Jill's Necktie Scarf, done in seed stitch with a narrowing neckline created with rib. It hangs perfectly and will always bring compliments.

    Featured Item: Mad Money Purse
Requiring only basic crocheting skills, the Mad Money Purse is a must for every wardrobe. Make it up in a fun yarn - from classic wool to wild novelties. We've felted it too!

This bag will take only a couple of hours to make, making it a fabulous gift. Teenagers, younger girls, and women of all ages can use this bag.

The pictured version is in Hip Hop. Other favorite yarns are Luna, Raffinesse and Naturewool (for a felted version)

    Tips and Wisdom
At the Knitting Getaway Experience, our five-day event in June, knitter Barbara Chema from Shaker Heights, OH was generous in taking notes of tips and pearls of wisdom handed out during the event. Here's a few tips:

bulletWhen knitting a dark color, place a white pillow case on your lap. You'll be able to see the stitches more clearly.
bulletMark increases or decreases with a small stitch marker or coil-less pin. Count rows from the marker to know when the next increase/decrease is required.
bulletIf you use an electric toothbrush, save the small plastic rings that come with the brushes - free stitch markers!
bulletWhen doing a long-tail cast on for a large number of stitches, use two balls of yarn - no chance of running out and having to start over.
bulletWhen instructed to slip a stitch, slip as to purl unless the instructions state otherwise. General rule: slip as if to purl unless you are going to work the stitch, then slip as if to knit.

    And some pearls of wisdom:

bulletWhy do people approach you when you knit? They envy you for the world you create for yourself.
bulletEvery stitch we knit passes through our hands. When the garment is worn, it hugs us.
bulletCotton is just wool going through menopause!

    Shop News
Knitters streamed through the door the morning before Hurricane Isabel was due to hit, stocking up on knitting projects for the long weekend ahead. Now that cooler weather is here, it's time to get some serious knitting done.

We have several new yarns in and Susan is often rearranging the shop, so stop by to see what you may have missed on an earlier visit.

Almost daily someone comes in the shop asking about beginning knitting classes. The level of enthusiasm for this wonderful creative "sport" is exciting. Extra time slots have been created to accomodate all these new knitters.
