Y2Knit Events

If you haven’t registered for an upcoming weekend, we still have spaces.

We’ve been busy checking out locations for upcoming Y2Knit Knitting Getaway Events.  In addition to the locations we used in 2002—Four Springs near Calistoga, CA and Sanctuary near Washington, DC, we’re adding locations near New York City, Seattle, Chicago and Los Angeles in 2003; Atlanta, Kansas City and Hawaii (a 5-day event!) in 2004. If you know a great retreat center that you think might be appropriate, please let us know.

The schedule for 2003 is at the end of this newsletter.  Note that we have added the Y2Knit Knitting Getaway Experience, a five-day event on the West Coast this year…we have created this event for those who want MORE of everything that makes a Knitting Getaway Weekend.  More knitting, yoga, great food, massage, workshops, learning, sharing, relaxing and whatever it is you want or need from your time with us.   The theme for this event is Creating a Sweater that Fits and Flatters. More details at www.y2knit.net.

Yarn2Knit

We’re just back from TNNA where we’ve looked over all the new yarns our vendors are offering for Spring—and even looking ahead to Fall.  Brown Sheep has a new handpainted version of their Wildfoote sock yarn (75% wool, 25% nylon).  The colors are fabulous and they’re hoping to have it for us to introduce to you at our Spring Events.  Stores won’t have it until Summer!  Cascade has a new yarn, Pearls (56% cotton, 44% viscose), which is dyed-to-match it’s popular Fixation (98.3% cotton, 1.7% elastin).  We’re working it up as cover-ups and summer tops.  Cascade also has some pima cotton blends we have our eye on.  We’re excited to be adding Pizzazz (a multi-fiber/multi-strand novelty) from Ironstone.  We’ve chosen 12 colors and this is a must-have for scarves or trims—this yarn says a lot without being over-the-top.  Look for some new designs for this one.  We’re putting together kits in different colorways of Provence by Classic Elite for Jill’s “Slip Stitch Cardigan” on page 28 in the Spring issue of Cast On.  Look for a pattern for a shell to go with this.

Designer Details

Y2Knit is seeking submissions of contemporary fashion and other types of designs. Accepted patterns are printed and offered for sale through the Y2Knit Knitting Resources, available on the Web and at all Y2Knit Knitting Getaway Events.

Tips from Jill                                 Great Sock Bind-off

This is an easy and fairly elastic bind off that is useful where you need extra elasticity.  It is easy to do and remember, but it will cause the edge to flare a bit so shouldn’t be used where a very smooth edge is needed.

Text Box: Right Side

This example is done in 1x1 rib with a knit stitch beginning the row.  It can be done in any pattern.

K1, *bring yarn forward, return stitch to left ndl; p2tog [new stitch and next stitch on left ndl which is a purl st]; put yarn to back, return stitch to left ndl; k2tog; rep from * across row.

Text Box: Wrong Side

The looseness of the stitches here will determine the elasticity and the look of the finished edge.  You may prefer the wrong side, in which case bind off on a wrong-side row.

Nurturing Notes

By popular demand, we’re sharing with you Natasha’s recipe for Not Fried Catfish, a delicious main dish we served at our Fall 2002 Knitting Getaway Weekends.  Do enjoy!

2 lbs. Fresh Catfish filets (or any firm white fish fillets such as cod, perch or monkfish)
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
Salt, cayenne and pepper to taste
½ teaspoon Old Bay Seasoning
2 garlic cloves, minced or pressed
4 tablespoons olive or vegetable oil
2 cups finely crumbled cornbread
4 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, lightly oil a 9x13 inch-baking pan. Rinse fish fillets and place them in baking pan. Sprinkle fish with lemon juice, salt, cayenne and Old Bay Seasoning. In heavy skillet, sauté garlic in oil for a couple of minutes. Stir in cornbread crumbs and continue to cook, stirring frequently until crumbs are golden and crisp.  Stir in parsley. Spoon the seasoned crumbs evenly over fish. Cover and bake for 15 minutes. Uncover and continue to bake for 10-15 minutes more, until fish is tender and topping is crisp.

Serves 4-6.  From Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant.
