Y2Knit Events

If you haven’t been to a Knitting Getaway Weekend yet, or if you are a past attendee interested in returning for more, check our dates and mark your calendars now for an upcoming 2003 Weekend.  These events offer an opportunity to relax in a natural setting (no TV, no radio, no phone!) and to nurture your creativity by participating in knitting workshops and sharing with other knitters.  Great food, yoga, massage, wine tasting, nature walks, and a yarn trade round out the Weekend.  It’s hard to leave, and you’ll feel as though you’ve been away longer than you really have. You’ll return home full of inspiration to knit and, we hope, full of the desire to smile more often—at yourself and others.

Due to the successful response to the Knitting Getaway Weekends, and our desire to provide an even richer, fuller event, we’re adding the Knitting Getaway Experience.  This Wednesday through Sunday event includes lots of knitting, knitting workshops, papermaking and journal writing all in the convivial atmosphere of Y2Knit Events.  Come prepared to knit and to create a journal for your thoughts and inspirations.  Picture yourself enjoying knitting meditation or journal writing beside the creek, atop a hill or in the meditation chapel. Envision sitting by the pool, on the porch or under the arbor knitting and chatting. Imagine all the knitting projects you can finish in five days—or how many you can start!  Plan also on yoga, good food and other nurturing activities, all included in the price of $895.

These events fill fast—you can reserve a space now for 2003.   We also have Gift Certificates!

Yarn2Knit

We’re excited to announce that we will now be selling yarn at the Knitting Getaway Weekends.  We’ve looked at lots of yarns and found a wonderful selection that ranges from basics to exotics, and covers a lot of territory in between.  And we’ve got colors for everyone!  We’ve got the new jacquard sock yarns as well as some standards and Fixation (cotton/spandex) in wonderful multi-colors and solids.  We have lots of other wonderful and colorful things too: Nature Spun in fabulous colors; Lamour, a heavenly cabled angora blend in yummy colors; Schaefer yarns in dk superwash wool and bulky merino are just the beginning of the novelty selection which includes multicolored, shiny, glittery, furry and unique yarns to mix and match.   We’ve found yarn to appeal to every taste and a wide variety of projects and we’re anxious to help you match your favorites to projects large and small.  We’ve added new Y2Knit patterns with these yarns in mind!

We also offer a full selection of Brittany double point needles (5" and 7.5") and 11" straights, Inox Express circulars (16" and 24"), and Clover straight needles (9"), as well as markers, row counters, crochet hooks, cable needles, and bent-tip tapestry needles.

We’ll have yarn color cards soon—your very own samples to finger. And in January 2003 we’ll begin offering yarn for purchase on our Web site at www.Y2Knit.net.

Designer Details

Knowing that knitting designers often have limited opportunities for exposure in knitting publications and that there is considerable competition for the space available, Y2Knit is expanding its pattern publishing to include other designers.  Y2Knit patterns are currently offered at Y2Knit events and will be available online beginning January 2003 at www.Y2Knit.net

Additionally, the Y2Knit staff brings their expertise in knitting design, marketing and professional and small business development to a new level—Y2Knit Designer Connections. Designers and other creative businesses looking for guidance and practical help in their transition from hobbyist to business owner can benefit from these services, which include the development of business plans and marketing strategies and tactics, establishment of accounting and administrative practices, and Web site design.   Personal and professional coaching for career change and/or transition, goal attainment and work/life balance is also offered. For more information contact us at 703.362.7424 or info@Y2Knit.net.

Nurturing Notes

The practice of yoga invites an experience similar to the process of knitting your time and energy into a masterful expression with the wonderful colors and textures of yarn.

Like knitting, yoga is a process of centering yourself, connecting with your breath and your life force.  As you tune into your position and adjust your alignment, quiet your mind, you can go with the flow, tapping into your creative genius and your resourcefulness.  Each movement is an expression of you in your purest form, guided by your design, patterns, and inspiration to achieve desired results.  Yoga facilitates connecting with your essence—enjoy it, relish it, feel it, know it and walk away taking that beauty and joy into every endeavor you are a part of.

The practice of Yoga for Knitters, available at the Y2Knit events, opens the body to alleviate tightness, increase circulation, deepen breathing and recreate balance.  Inspiration and creativity flow freely, giving us wonderful insights to take back to our knitting.

Knitting Tips from Jill Wolcott                                        Crochet Cast-On

I do the crochet chain with a smooth yarn, called waste yarn (WY).  It is easier if it is close to the size of the main yarn, but not essential.

With WY, make a chain that is (a) several chains longer than the number of stitches to be cast on (this allows you to pick up every chain leaving a couple extras at each end) and (b) longer than the length of the number of stitches to be cast on (if you are using a yarn that is thinner than the main yarn, it is better to skip a chain every once in a while than to bunch everything into a shorter length).  When you have sufficient length and number of chains, cut the yarn and pull the end through the last chain.  Put a knot in the end at the beginning of the chain.

Keep track of the right side (RS) of the chain, which looks much like a column of stitches. The wrong side looks bumpier.

Pick up the loop on the BACK of the chain stitches.  With the chain RS down, the loop looks like it is holding the two chains together.  Begin a couple of chains in from the end and go into each loop on the back of the chain from front to back.  Continue until you have the correct number of stitches on your needle.   Join the main yarn and begin working your piece.

Alternatively, pick up the main yarn through each loop, using the tip of the needle to pull the yarn through as you would to knit a stitch.  That would then be Row 1 of your piece.

Once the stitches no longer need to be held open by the chain (because they have been finished or are being held by an inserted needle), undo the last chain (this will be the end without the knot) by pulling the end out.  You can now pull on this end and “unzip” the chain.  Should your “zip” stick, clip the WY and undo it, then pull again.
